Pros:

-Dual alarms
-Progressively increasing volume of radio alarm
-Good overall sound quality
-Easy to use basic features by touch
-Informative LCD screen

Cons:

-Overdone styling
-Complicated menus/setup
-LCD screen is small and hard to read

Well, I've been living with this for about 3 weeks now, and I'm pleased with the purchase. I needed to replace an 8 year old Philips CD-radio with dual alarms mostly because the sound quality was like listening to AM radio through a drive-through restaurant speaker.

One of my top priorities, other than sound quality, was a dual alarm. I can't tell you how helpful these are if your schedule changes day to day. Not only does the JBL have dual alarms, it does it better than any other system I've seen. It has a separate on/off button for each alarm AND you have the option to have each alarm set to go off on weekdays only, weekends only, or all 7 days. This is also the first alarm I have had with a progressively increasing volume on alarm. It will start playing the music fairly soft and gradually increase the volume over the next 30 seconds or more. This is much gentler than the jarring way most alarms go off (or worse, the dreaded BEEP). Be sure, though, that if you do not respond to the alarm, it continues to get louder and should be enough to wake up even heavy sleepers. If that's not sufficient, it does have the obligitory BEEP alarm, too.

As far as sound quality goes, it's as good as your average, similarly priced "boom box." It gets plenty loud, has decent bass, and the highs are clear. It won't hold a candle to a good home theater/stereo system, but it's more than adequate for a bedroom. It's the best clock/radio I've ever heard and is easily the best iPod-specific speaker system I've tested out (though I have not listened to the Altec Lansing inMotion 7). It's not good enough to allow a sharp-eared listener to really notice the compression artifacts of the MP3s being played through your iPod.

Other nice touches include an LCD screen that is able to display a good amount of useful information. It can display Radio Data Sytem (RDS) information, though no RDS stations exist in my area so I couldn't test this out. Similarly, the LCD has an autoadjusting brightness based on ambient light (which can also be manually adjusted instead, if desired). The clock can be autoset by scanning through radio stations (assuming, of course, the station has their own clock set correctly), and a battery backup will rescue you in case of a brief power outage in the night (though the manual doesn't say if it will allow the alarm to go off if power remains out). Finally, the unit has the world's easiest-to-find snooze button. It's the big circle on the very top of the unit that looks like part of the speaker grill.

On the down side, I personally miss having a built-in CD player. I hate having to remember to take my iPod out of it and put it back in the car every day. A CD player would be a useful feature.

The LCD screen is relatively small and is angled away from you towards the ceiling in such a way that trying to read it from bed is difficult due to contrast issues (blue numbers on a slightly less bright blue background). You can adjust the contrast, but it makes it that much more difficult to read when you are standing (e.g., getting dressed). Some people may also be put off by the brightness of the LCD. If you require absolute darkness, you will not appreciate the little blue alien spacecraft sitting on your nightstand staring at you all night. To make it worse, there's a little blue LED light in the top of the circle facing down, which reflects off the unit's base in interesting ways. I would suggest that the black unit if either of these light issues are a concern.

Next up, the buttons. All of the immediate functions (volume, source select, snooze) are easy to use, even with your eyes closed, mostly because there are only a few buttons and they are distinctly laid out. However, if you have difficulty programming a VCR, you will hate trying to configure this JBL. The relatively limited number of buttons means that all the settings of the system, and there are quite a few, are buried in a hard to use interface. It consists of a series of nested menus, most of which don't make a lot of sense. It may hold an iPod, but it's nowhere near as easy to use as one. Unless you're very comfortable with obfuscated menus, or are willing to take the time to learn, you'd be better off getting something else.

I know it has garnered raves for its styling, but in reality, it doesn't really work. Sure, it's beautiful sitting on a laboratory table, but unless you're George Jetson, the unit will not match your bedroom decor. The unit stands out like a zebra in a herd of horses. It is also bigger than you think judging from the pictures, and it takes up a fair amount of nightstand real estate. I'd suggest checking out the measurements before jumping in.

Overall, I find that the positives outweigh the negatives. I'm glad the price has come down considerably from it's initial [...] to the current sub [...] range. It's the best-of-breed for iPod alarm/clock radios and makes a fine stand-alone unit even without the iPod functionality. Now I've just got to get another iPod to leave docked permanently.

Tripp Lite TM500 500VA UPS Under Monitor Standby 6 outlets Review

Tripp Lite TM500 500VA UPS Under Monitor Standby 6 outlets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a unique Under Monitor computer Surge Protector, and UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) as well a power distribution system for an individual computer work station in home or office. It has the advantage of having six power outlets for computers and their peripherals all of which are provided with Surge protection, 4- of which are provided with battery back-up, 5- of which are independently switched and one of which is always on. It carries a 2-year warranty on the unit and lifetime $150,000 Ultimate Insurance Protection on all equipment attached to it, including surge protection for primary phone lines from the wall to a DSL modem or telephone connection to the computer, as well.

I formerly used just a simple surge protector with switched power control for my desktop computer and related peripherals (laser printer, inkjet printer, scanner, speakers, wireless hub, DSL modem, three external hard drives, an external DVD drive and burner and several powered USB and Firewire hubs). This unit allows me to provide convenient at-my-fingertips power control over the entire system, under control of a MASTER switch, while at the same time allowing me to isolate certain part-time peripherals, like the DVD deck and scanner from full-time operation. And it provides back-up power operation, from 6 min. at 300W to 34 minutes at 80W, depending on total load from the main computer and peripherals on the battery UPS system. It is especially compact and convenient when placed under my all-in-one Intel iMac that has no separate monitor, or CPU module floor unit (however it could accommodate that easily, too). The unit also has 4 pilot light alarmed sensors that give you constant visual indication of power state to the unit, surge alarm, and battery state.

It was relatively easy to install, with the most complex aspect being the task of listing all the various equipment to be connected, and then deciding which needed to always be ON (wireless hubs serving other computers; USB & FireWire/IEEE-1345 hubs; printers requiring shutdown only from their own front panel) and those that needed back-up power in the event of power loss. I used some dual plug Y-cords and triple outlet extensions to branch out from some of the units outlet plugs to accommodate the large variety of peripherals on my system work station.

Estimated life of the internal sealed lead acid battery is 6-years and replacement batteries are available on-line or in-store according to the Tripp Lite site for between $36 and $42 plus tax and shpg.

My only negative for this item was that the manufacturer used raised lettering without painting in the labels for the rear outlets and for the front switches. In my case, since my computer does not have a separate monitor, and my two printers needed to be powered on and off ONLY from their own front panel (i.e. Needed to be always on from the MASTER switch), I found the manufacturers choice of labeling to be inconsistent and confusing to my needs. So I had to re-labeled the switch functions to indicate individual control switches for my Scanner, Ext. DVD, Ext. HDs, and so forth. I did this with a computer printed label strip.

And best of all, the Amazon price was more than 50% off MSRP.

Excellent image quality, good color and contrast, amazing resolution.Very easy to use and setup.I have owned Sony cameras almost exclusively and wondered how the joystick control would work over the touch screen - it worked very well - if fact I liked it better. My largest concern and the reason I returned this unit was because of the wind noise. No matter what the setting, the slightest breeze would create an awful muffling sound - drowning out important sounds - even kids screaming and having fun at the pool. However, to be fair, the indoor audio quality is right up there with best in my opinion.

If you want to edit videos created by this camera consider this -- the iLink (IEEE 1394) firewire connection does work however you must record in the lower quality 1440 CBR (Constant Bitrate Mode) in order to get the video over the link and into popular capture software such as Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas and Apple's Final Cut Pro.I found this to be a little confusing and not well documented. Moreover, the camera will NOT stream video over this link - only playback previous recording footage.

Batter life is remarkable and the included software works great. You can create DVDs and Video CDs right over the USB cable using the supplied software.

Also, I read a ton of reviews about the awful image quality when taking video in low light conditions.I have to disagree with these prior reviews. I found it to perform about even with the Sony HDV-A1U - a professional HD camera.

JVC Everio S GZ-MS100 Flash Memory Camcorder with 35x Optical Zoom Review

JVC Everio S GZ-MS100 Flash Memory Camcorder with 35x Optical Zoom

I have had this camcorder for about a month. The main reason I bought this camcorder was for convenience. I have MiniDV camcorder as well, but I never got around to uploading video from camcorder to computer and then converting AVIs to mpeg to DVD. The workflow with MiniDV was too time-consuming and needed a lot of system resources (1 hr AVI takes about 13GB disk space!).

This camcorder was great. For around $320-ish, its great value. Its totally solid state, no moving parts. I use 16GB SDHC card (around $50-ish), that card can record about 3hr58min video in best quality. The battery lasts about 2 hrs. I doubt I will ever shoot more than 4 hr video in a day. you can always back up your video on a computer at the end of the day or buy multiple SDHC cards.

You can use the included USB cable or a SD card reader to upload mpeg files to a computer. You can upload video and burn a DVD in as little as 10 minutes (if you go straight to DVD and do not edit). You can also upload your video you-tube or other video hosting websites. It comes with included software that is supposed to make YouTube uploads easy for the user. I like to do it myself, have not used the software that much.

The picture quality of this camcorder is amazing. Its not a HD camcorder, so don't expect wonders on your HDTV, but picture quality is very good on SDTVs. The low light capabilities of this camcorder are great. However, auto white balance under light bulbs (indoors) is not that great. You will get better results with manual white balance. Recorded sound quality is OK, not great, but OK. It comes with 35X optical zoom, which is the best in its class. It has digital image stabilization which works very well.this camcorder does allow some manual controls for the enthusiast.

JVC has this new laser touch based interface. It sure looks fancy, but is not great to use. It takes a little getting used to and you never really get a hang of it. Its not very accurate. But this is a simple camcorder and most uses will use it in auto mode all the time. So, the laser interface is not a deal-breaker kind of a thing.

This is a very small camcorder. Its very light. Its easy to handle and feels firm and secure in my hands. It does not come with a neck strap (I just use the one from my previous MiniDV camcorder). It has a built-in lens cover, which is better than some pastic-ring-tied-with-thread lens caps which are annoying. The included battery lasts about 2 hrs. It can also take still pictures, though I have never used it to take still pictures so far.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this to a friend.

This is the best value in a UPS for a home networking user. For under a hundred bucks, you get a 500VA ups that not only has network conectivity, but has outlet control! You will end up paying many times the cost of this to find those two features in another ups, and when you do, it will likely be made to fit in a 19" rack.I've got three of these things, on powering my internet/networking gear that's in a Leviton SMC-420 structured media enclosure, and it actually fits INSIDE the enclosure.Another powers my HTPC and Xbox360 that are hooked up to my HDTV, and finally the third powers my windows Home Server machine (currently WHS is in beta/CTP).

I've got another UPS, (smart ups 700) that i bought refurb'd back in college, which i've upgraded to include the networking module and got a new battery for. This last one powers my Beyond TV Server machine which records HDTV over-the-air (OTA) and streams it to the HTPC downstairs.

I will always continue to buy APC for my UPS needs and will likely be buying another couple of these HS-500's when the need arises for another UPS unit; You just can't beat the value of all that this unit provides!

Once the OCZ UPS 1500 arrived and I removed from the box, the front panel was crushed.
At better examination the entire front was made of very flimsy plastic attached by
very thin plastic pins.

In my opinion, even if the unit would have arrived intact at the moment the front panel
would have been touched it would have broken and no way could it have been repairable.

The entire unit was made of solid metal and yet the front was so flimsy, it was certainly
the wrong place to cut corners, especially by the brand of company.

I would not recommend this to anyone because my reputation would be on the line.

Product Description:
Designed by PC Power & Cooling to be fully compatible with all PC Power and OCZ brand PSUs, the Pro-Source 1500 UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is your ultimate source of back-up power. The Pro-Source utilizes a pure sine wave, versus the conventional -step- sine wave employed by lesser quality UPS units. A pure sine wave is essential to a professional-grade back-up power source, while an inferior -step- sine wave plays havoc with today-s sophisticated and sensitive power factor correction (PFC) circuitry, making it possible for your PSU to reject the back-up power source and shut down. A professional UPS should output the same quality of power that your utility line delivers, and the Pro-Source 1500VA does just that, providing a clean, pure sine wave to effectively power your high-performance PSU during a utility failure. Truly protect your high performance, enthusiast, and mission-critical system with a PC Power & Cooling Pro-Source. With a history of almost 25 years building long-lasting, investment-grade PSUs, PC Power built the Pro-Source 1500 using the highest quality components and circuitry. Cyberpower CP550SL UPS - 550VA/330W 8-Outlet RJ11 Compact Design EMI/RFI USB Review

Cyberpower CP550SL UPS - 550VA/330W 8-Outlet RJ11 Compact Design EMI/RFI USB
Average Reviews:

I have one of these and it did its job during a power outage yesterday. This UPS is cheap and works perfectly fine but beware the pitfalls of stepped square wave UPS's. During yesterday's particular outage, this unit kicked on to protect a computer system. The system shut down fine but the power adapter for the USB hard drive that was plugged into the UPS overheated trying to operate on the stepped square wave power and failed destroying the USB enclosure and drive in the process.

The important thing here is that this failure was NOT the fault of the UPS. It did exactly what it was supposed to do; however if you are protecting valuable data or critical infrastructure with one of these just remember you can step up to the category of true sine wave UPS's for only about $100. The price difference is well worth it!
