(More customer reviews)I bought mine November 2003. I just ordered its fourth set of 4 1280 12v batteries, which means battery life averages well under 3 years. The first set swelled up so bad it took 4 hours to cut them free in order to install the new ones. The bad battery warning never has worked. When a battery goes bad, it simply shuts down.
Every time the AC power goes off, its fan comes on and stays on for quite some time. It's a common 8cm device like used in computer power supplies, but run at high speed, which is why it's annoyingly noisy. The need for a cooling fan makes me wonder how much power it consumes just keeping the batteries charged.
It weighs about 36 pounds without its batteries. Its transformer is big and heavy.
I took it to my local service tech to check out the second time batteries went bad. He thinks it's a competent design, but the plastic face/cover's flimsy bottom clip recesses broke away, which means it won't stay on properly any more.
